’Tis the season to start thinking of snowfall, those who may need assistance and community service.
Snow-covered sidewalks can be hazardous for everyone. As we head into winter weather, volunteers in the Strathroy-Caradoc community are stepping up to help shovel snow for those in need through a neighbourly initiative, from the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc, called the Snow Angels Program. This team of dedicated volunteers, known as “Snow Angels,” assists with removing snow from essential pathways, free of charge, for their assigned resident(s) after each snowfall, helping to ensure safer access throughout the season.
The program’s goal is to minimize the difficulties posed by winter weather and build community connections at the same time. Removing snow from private sidewalks and driveways can be a challenge for a number of residents, especially after large storms, and shoveling snow also poses a health risk for many. Snowy sidewalks can be the reason someone can’t get to work, school or medical appointments safely; snow removal is crucial for preventing falls and maintaining accessibility in the municipality’s neighbourhoods.
Along with fostering stronger community relationships and relieving some of the stress that comes from a heavy snowfall or freeze, Snow Angels help make sidewalks and driveways safer during winter weather.
Keeping these clear isn't just about convenience – it's vital for the safety of pedestrians, mail carriers, and emergency responders.
As this is a volunteer-driven program, assistance cannot be guaranteed. Every effort is made to match residents with volunteers; however, there are times when the number of requests simply exceeds the number of available Snow Angels. Please note that volunteers often have school or work commitments during the day, so snow removal may not occur until evening hours.
It’s more than just removing snow; it’s neighbours helping neighbours. The program is about making winter a little easier and a lot safer for those who find it challenging to manage snow removal on their own. This volunteer-based initiative is a great way to give back to the community, but in order to work, the program needs volunteers.
If you would like to register for assistance or volunteer as a Snow Angel, please complete the form on the website at www.strathroy-caradoc.ca or phone 519.245.1070. To qualify, residents must live within the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc.
Snow Angels are truly the coolest volunteers in town.
