Prom Project Strathroy is inviting the community to think differently about formalwear with the launch of the Upscaled Dress Revival Challenge, an exciting new sewing competition that celebrates creativity, sustainability, and community.

The first-of-its-kind challenge encourages participants to transform six damaged or discarded formal dresses into one beautiful, runway-worthy garment. By giving dresses destined for the landfill a second life, the competition showcases how imagination and skill can turn forgotten fabrics into wearable works of art.

Each year, Prom Project Strathroy receives generous donations of formalwear. While many of the dresses find new homes with students attending proms and other special celebrations, some are too damaged, stained, or outdated to distribute. Rather than throwing them away, the organization saw an opportunity to create something inspiring while drawing attention to its mission of ensuring every student has access to formalwear for life's special moments.

Participants will receive a bundle of six dresses between September 2 and 4, before beginning the two-week challenge on September 4. Using primarily the materials provided, each participant will create one completely reimagined garment. Final designs must be submitted by September 18 and will be unveiled during the September 19 Night Market in Strathroy, where the community is invited to admire the creations and vote for the People's Choice Award.

The Upscaled Dress Revival Challenge is open to anyone with an interest in sewing or fashion, from beginners to intermediate sewists looking to challenge their creativity and develop their skills.

As preparations continue, Prom Project Strathroy is also seeking additional judges, event and prize sponsors, volunteer models, event volunteers, and participants who are ready to take on the challenge. Community support will help make the inaugural event a success and lay the foundation for what organizers hope will become an annual tradition.

By combining fashion, sustainability, and community spirit, the Upscaled Dress Revival Challenge aims to reduce textile waste, celebrate local talent, and inspire creative thinking while supporting the ongoing work of Prom Project Strathroy.

Registration is now open. Those interested in participating, volunteering, sponsoring the event, or learning more can contact Cara Janzen at info@carajanzenrhn.com.
